During Max’s development, he was originally named JD, though this was changed as it didn’t flow off the tongue as well as he thought, and Bark wanted to avoid his fursona being associated with that year's political events. He had always given Zack hats, and Max was originally intended to inherit that, but it was decided to give him goggles based on a friend’s version of Zack that had them. Following the change, he went a step further and made the goggles Max’s signature appearance, adding to the character's already distinctive pink highlights and heterochromia eyes.

Background

[edit | edit source]

Created in 2024, Max is Tony Bark’s fursona that doubles as a supporting character or protagonist in his stories. Although a relatively new addition to the Caseyverse canon, he is directly derived from previous modern incarnations of Zack Casey that were based on his Second Life avatar. This decision to split the two gave Bark the chance to remove the baggage and frequent retcons that Zack had accumulated over the last decade. He returned Zack to his pre-2010s portrayal and went on to refine Max.

During Max’s development, he was originally named JD. However, this quickly changed because he didn't want Max to be associated with that year’s political events, and he found it didn't roll off the tongue as well as thought. Bark had always given his characters some sort of headwear due to having trouble drawing hair. Zack had a backwards baseball cap that Max was originally intended to inherit, but it was decided to give him goggles based on a concept provided by a friend who gave Zack one. This change, alongside pink highlights added to his brown hair, would become his signature look.

In late 2024, Bark reworked Max to double as a speedster superhero, Quick Fox, in an effort to address the criticisms of live-action portrayals of The Flash, mainly the CW and DCEU. He is critical of those versions Flash due to how overpowered he is, as well as the poor executions of the Flashpoint Paradox. Bark is overly critical of CW version, as he masters the Speed Force by episode 2 of season 1. He decided that, since he can't change the Flash, he could at least do the character justice with Quick Fox by giving him clearly defined limits. This doubled as an effort to satisfy his boyfriend, who first suggested the idea of a superhero character a long time ago. While Bark gladly agreed upon it, he had it all backwards in the beginning.[1]
