While they may appear to be counterproductive, Zero Licenses hold significance when a creator does not wish for anyone to have exclusive rights over their creations. Both Zero Licenses and public domain in general grant equal derivative, redistribution, and commercial rights to everyone, thus preventing the establishment of a monopoly by an individual or entity. These licenses were developed as an effort to address copyright's "life+X" protection period, allowing creators the option to opt-out during their lifetime.

Tony Bark initially had doubts about using any Zero License for his work in both media and with the Caseyverse as a whole. His primary reason for using it was due to the lack of resources available to enforce copyright on all of his artwork. It wasn't until Tony realized that if everyone had equal rights to his creations, no one would have exclusive control over them. This effectively canceled out any potential attempts by a single person or entity to monopolize his work. In theory, this approach would prevent a hypothetical greedy publisher from dictating terms if such an offer were ever made.

Zack Casey

== Background ==

Developed in 2005 when Bark was still a teenager, Zack has appeared in numerous of his subsequent works. Initially created for comics and animation, he eventually evolved into an avatar and outlet for Bark due to his lack of storytelling prowess at the time. The two roles were later combined once the Caseyverse established a strong foundation for narrative development.

Zack's character, however, remains largely unchanged as a result of copyright restrictions. This is because his history was shaped by Bark's real-life friends he met on DeviantART and their characters interacting through art or comics for amusement. Since then, all these friends have moved on, leaving Zack's personality as a rough reflection of Bark's younger self. Only his origins, such as living in a cul-de-sac, have been adapted for the Caseyverse; however, the history and interactions with the characters from DeviantART cannot be legally considered canon.

Eventually, Zack was replaced by his spiritual successor, [[jaydee|Jaydee]], or J.D., a blue fennec. While sharing similar traits to Zack, including interests and even blue fur, JD does not suffer from the unintentional issues that plague Bark's first character.

The comic revolves around the title character, Wuffle, a "Big Nice Wolf" who is a farm boy living in a Gingerbread Village with his friends Pui Pui, a lazy hedgehog, and Foxxo, a wealthy fox. It was first published on Tumblr in 2012 and concluded in 2017.

== History ==

Wuffle originally started as a four-panel comic, but its second issue, titled "Year 2," switched to full pages and introduced more developed, mature storylines while still retaining its roots. The third and final year featured a hybrid of the two formats. In an unusual move, Piti Yindee released all copyrights to the comics under the Creative Commons Zero license, effectively placing them in the public domain. All three issues were officially published as physical books and PDFs under the same waiver. The webcomic has since been archived on sites like Archive.org and syndicated in the form of motion comics on YouTube. Tony Bark used the raw contents of the PDF available in the Archive.org release to create a ZIP-based comic book reader version of all three issues.

The original concept for Wuffle was intended to be a Mario-style platformer against the three little pigs. Although the farm boy premise remained consistent, Wuffle's appearance evolved throughout the development. He initially wore a patched vest, broken shoes, and no pants with slightly darker toned fur. An early 3D version introduced denim shorts and shoes. However, this concept was dropped in favor of comics due to collage.

Wuffle is a wolf with a big heart. Currently he's living as a farmer in a barn that is on a hill near Gingerbread Village. He never turns away from people who need a helping hand. He is also willing to help them out not expecting anything in return. However, Wuffle tends to be naive and too trusting, which often brings him unexpected trouble.
=== Pui Pui ===
A hedgehog who seems to be able to complain about anything he ever lays his eyes upon, though he never means any harm. Hot-headed and impatient, but, surprisingly, Pui Pui is Wuffle's best buddy and co-worker. It was Wuffle's idea that working on a farm might help Pui Pui with his anger management.
Though admittedly, he prefers eating and sleeping.

=== Foxxo ===
A young fox who's the owner of Gingerbread Village, as well as the bakery with the same name — the Gingerbread Bakery. Foxxo never wastes a moment to show off how much money he has. One good example is how he always wears a tuxedo when he walks around the village.

In "One Flu over the Hamster's Nest," Wuffle is depicted as being smarter than he initially appears. His familiarity with the village's inhabitants can be compared to that of Dr. Grayham.

Before the events of "Sister Act" and "The Carrot Hunt," there was no information available about Wuffle's family. In "Sister Act," it is revealed that his parents parted ways due to their differing interests: Wuffle's mother preferred city life, while his father favored nature. However, the latter rarely visited the village. It is in "The Carrot Hunt" that it becomes clear Wuffle's parents never divorced; still, he feels a sense of responsibility for their separation and his father's lack of visits.

The power of shape-shifting requires considerable practice and effort to maintain the illusion, or it may fail and cause the individual to revert to their original form. While this gives him a witty and smug demeanor around his adversaries, he is generally humble in nature.

JD's curiosity led him to develop an eccentric talent for experimentation, particularly in computer science and programming. He found enjoyment in creating unique software applications by combining various toolkits and frameworks. This hobby contributed to his rebellious streak. Additionally, JD enjoyed beta testing for numerous companies as a pastime, which provided him with valuable insights into the tech industry.

JD's activities in the tech world did not go unnoticed by major conglomerates such as TPaw. His contributions led to various roles within these companies, although his rebellious behavior often overshadowed his unique talents. Nonetheless, JD was content with his position, focusing on preventing unnecessary restrictions on software and data harvesting from users rather than dealing with stockholders and board of directors who encouraged such practices.

==== Cyberpunk ====
Two notable variants of the character that originated from Second Life as an early concept were a cyberpunk version that developed before JD evolved into a proper character. In 2019 and 2020, respectively, a cyborg or android variant was created.

Set in a near-future timeline, this origin story involved a car accident while JD was in university that led to one of these outcomes after the demands from his grieving father. In the cyborg branch, the military convinced them to join in exchange for their safety. Due to JD's skills, this agreement came with a catch of spending more time maintaining cybersecurity on behalf of the government instead of allowing him to return to his hobbies. The android branch was dropped after Bark realized that the military arc proved to be already dark enough. Although a new character was created to fill the android role, JD's personality was designed to be compatible with both portrayals.

== Behind the Scenes ==

Jaydee Casey is a spiritual successor to Tony Bark's Zack Casey, his first character and original fursona, who shared a similar appearance as a blue fox. In Zack's design, his eyes were green, and he had brown hair without any highlights, as it was created on the spur of the moment on DeviantART when Bark was a teenager. Bark has been trying to evolve Zack after his attempts to move away from him failed, due to his genuine love for the character, as Zack represents his passion for music and dreams of being a DJ and musician, which are still present but not as prominent today.

Simultaneously, Bark was developing a fennec avatar on Second Life with retro-futuristic aesthetics, featuring a letterman jacket and skirt combined with a cassette and later a tablet. This new character was initially portrayed as Zack, transforming from a blue fox to a fennec in the process. However, Bark found it challenging to reconcile the conflicting portrayals, as this new incarnation was meant to explore technology while downplaying the musical aspect. He branched off this new incarnation into an ambiguous relative, creating Jaydee and suggesting he was either a brother or cousin. However, Bark chose to give them a brotherly relationship regardless of their position on the family tree. This decision paid homage to his time spent growing up with his cousin while on vacation at his grandmother's.

Hank Howell

== Background ==

Work on Hank Howell likely began sometime after the Wuffle comics concluded in 2017. Piti had been producing GIFs in the comic's Tumblr for various celebrations and expressed interest in getting into animation nearing the end of its run. Concept art for the character started around the late 2010s.

While Piti openly published the animation development and concept art on Patreon, it wasn't until 2023 that the character was formally introduced on YouTube. Since "Bun Hunting: Overture," copyrights for the animation were waived under the CC0 license during the credits, placing it and the characters permanently into the public domain.

Tony Bark has noticed some similarities between Wuffle's early concept art and Hank's final design, such as sharper lines, dark brown fur, vest, and pants. Bark theorized that Hank was likely an evolution of those previous designs, as he had similarly thought of making a mature wolf character based off of the same concepts as well.

Foxxo's stoic polar bear butler, Joe, is an essential figure in the character's life. Furthermore, Joe encourages Foxxo to embrace long-term efforts and skill development when his friends present him with opportunities for growth.
